Somewhat surprising that this hasn't been commented on yet. They beg to be compared, since they fit within the same (sub)genre (visual poem documentary), Ron Fricke worked on both films (DP on Koyaanisqatsi, director and DP on Baraka), and Baraka almost directly lifted an entire sequence from Koyaanisqatsi (montage intercutting between sausages/busy city life replaced by a montage intercutting between chickens/busy city life). Between the two, Baraka is more broad and vague, whereas Koyaanisqatsi is surprisingly focused and clear. The latter works better as a whole, though Baraka might have the more impressive cinematography. Koyaanisqatsi is also better paced, Baraka becomes a bit too samey near the end, and its somewhat longer length becomes its detriment. For these reasons, I think Koyaanisqatsi is the better of the two, even if Baraka is still definitely worth checking out.
