Both brutal French endurance tests, but Calvaire is actually scary, while Martyrs is more of a chore.

Calvaire is a slog of pointless NFE Violence without any rhyme or reason. Martyrs, on the other hand is filled with complex characters an actual plot and a willingness to explore pain and horror that Calvaire doesn't have. In its effort to cram as much suffering into 94 minutes as possible Calvaire is quantity over quality. Martyrs, on the other hand uses a watchmaker's precision to focus on important moments of pain and trauma to complete a unique effect that has never been replicated in cinema.
