The 2016 entry into the series is a more than satisfying sequel that captures the terror of the original and finds the perfect balance that fits the 21st Century style of horror. However, it just isn't the original, period. That movie captures ambiguous magic that isn't matched by any film in its genre.

The original by a mile. The Blair Witch feels too much like a remake.

I didn’t hate the 2016 sequel. They tried with the story to give it a reason to exist and to make it interesting. And I think they did the best possible job they could’ve. Was it going to rehash a little? Well, what more could they have done with a movie about film students going into the woods looking for a ghost? And it had its fair share of inventive ideas. It was pretty bland overall, but even the first one was. It was still a decent horror movie until they introduced all that supernatural bull crap that ruined the ambiguity of the first as well as this one. The last 30 minutes (although I loved how they return to the house and as soon as they enter you immediately feel lost in it which is effective filmmaking, they also made climbing a tree feel claustrophobic and the scene where Lisa was crawling through the sinkhole was also great) was very clichéd with the ghost taking them all off one by one. The first film is one of the most ambitious experiments in cinema. 3 kids stay in the woods for 5 nights filming their experiences. I loved the realism in the documentary style, the ambiguity in whether there was a witch and the eerie atmosphere. I didn’t love the movie, purely because I didn’t love it as a movie, but it was a very interesting watch and the winner here!

The reboot is total forgettable crap cheesy, but I personally much enjoy the 1999 version.
