Whoa, whoa, whoa! It's always fun when remakes or different adaptations of the same source material come up on FlickChart. Let's get this straight: there has never been a faithful adaptation of the wonderful Gaston Leroux novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, except perhaps for the Lon Chaney film, which was great until they botched the ending. The Lloyd Webber musical adheres pretty closely to the major events of the book, but messes up the title character by trying to make him sympathetic too early on, as well as "sexy." (Ooof!) The fact that few of the people in this musical can actually sing doesn't help matters. On the other hand, the 60s Hammer horror film doesn't even try to be faithful to the book, and I actually prefer this better, because I am able to separate it completely from Leroux in my mind and treat it as its own movie. As such, it's quite entertaining, and the original score for the opera near the end is more to my tastes than most of Webber's songs.
