Hocus Pocus 2 was . . . not good.

The charm of the original is its camp humor. The jokes are cheesy and overacted, but that’s the point. There isn’t much character development, but there doesn’t need to be. It’s a comedy about 3 17th century witches thrust into the modern (1990s) world. The actors took the script and made it funny, with several of them improvising some of the best lines.

The second one relies too much on that nostalgia. The original wasn’t well-received, but became a cult favorite that entered mainstream popularity through repeated TV airings. The dialogue of the sequel tries too hard to be funny instead of letting the actors run away and have fun with it. And lines that could have been funny were often beaten to death, such as the reverend’s lines. Hocus Pocus 2 focuses more on the feel-good family/friend aspect, with Mike instantly recognizing the error of his ways (unlike Jay and Ice who are left in their cages at the end of the movie), Gilbert changing as soon as the sisters are summoned, and Winnie doing a 180 once Mary and Sarah were gone. In the first, Winnie unabashedly cursed her luck of being stuck with her sisters while Mary and Sarah responded with their own humor.

Overall, Hocus Pocus 2 follows the same route as recent Disney movies that attempt to make the villains relatable and redeemable. This, coupled with the heavy-handed nostalgia, made it pretty damn boring.

I didn’t expect much from the sequel, but I was still disappointed. The teen actors did fine, and Taylor Paige Henderson did an excellent job of recreating the mannerisms Bette Midler gave Winnie.
